About

The Chateau Tongariro was constructed in 1929 by Rodolph Lysaght Wigley a pioneer of Tourism in New Zealand.   He had won the tender by the newly formed Tongariro Park Board to develop and build a Hostel to provide accommodation for visitors to the Park and encourage Tourism.   It was designed by Herbert Hall and constructed by Fletcher Construction.   Construction started in January 1929 and the Hostel was opened to guests on the 1st August 1929.

Since that date Chateau Tongariro has become a New Zealand icon.   Chateau Tongariro has a rich and fascinating history and has played a significant role in the development of both the Dual World Heritage Tongariro National Park and the New Zealand Ski Industry.
